CONFLICT IN DARFUR
For over three years,
civilians in the Darfur region of Sudan have lived in near constant fear
of being raided by the Janaweed militias, which many say are directly
supported and directed by the Sudanese government. Civilians face the
constant threat of their homes being destroyed and being tortured,
raped, or killed.
Since February 2003,
there have been hundreds of thousands killed and millions displaced from
their homes. The United States and many other countries and human
rights organizations have called this genocide, something you will be
learning about in this WebQuest.
For this WebQuest, each
person (or group) will choose a role to play. Your objective will be to
gain a thorough understanding of the conflict in Darfur, why many are
calling this genocide and what this word means. You will also need to
formulate a plan for bringing peace to the region and present it to your
colleagues (i.e. the rest of your class). The roles you may choose from
are 1) member(s) of the United Nations Mission in the Sudan; 2)
civilian(s) living in Darfur.
